You know you're in South America when...

You get a hall pass because the Government said it was ok to go home to watch the game.

This new proposal means that class times will be relaxed during the FIFA World Cup, meaning that school students will be able to watch games featuring the Chilean team.
Fidel Espinoza, the lead person responsible for the proposal, said during his speech to the Chamber “from our point of view reconstruction involves not only material, but also must rebuild the soul of our country.”

Never mind that technically, there are still schools that have not been rebuilt since being destroyed by the Earthquake.  You have to hand it to Chileans, though. Maybe it's this kind of prioritizing that gives them that resilient spirit to overcome.

All I know is back home in Canada, when I was a kid we'd be praying for snow days or for it to hit 30° below, thinking they'd finally close the schools for the day. They never did. I like the Chilean version of a snow day better, don't you?
