Are things back to normal yet?

So I took March off. Aaaannnd April. Seriously, every time I looked at my laptop with the thought of blogging, I felt like this (see picture to your left). A passing comment in email from my friend Keith made me ponder though, are things back to normal yet?

I think I got a little burnt out during the earthquake aftermath...

Something that people might not understand, but unlike Haiti where almost every reputable international organization was on the ground, Chile is not asking for that level of help. If you donate to an international aid organization, but intend it to go to Chile, make sure they really are aiding Chile. There is only a handful as I understand at this point, and their assistance is fairly limited. That could change of course. So for now the above organization is the best way to get direct funds to an organization working in Chile from the start as we know for a fact they were on the ground helping out shortly after the earthquake hit.

Chile is one of South America's wealthier countries, but every little bit helps when destruction of this magnitude occurs. Please don't hesitate to donate to other international aid organizations if you wish, just be aware it might go somewhere else other than Chile and we hope it turns out that it is more needed somewhere else. It is really too early to tell the extent of the damage, but it seems to worsen as more time passes.  -taken from All Chile forum

An evocative collection of images from Chile can be found here. We were very lucky our area suffered very little compared to others. Our hearts go out to all those who have lost their loved ones and their homes.

In the interim, I am continuing to try to contact people here in Chile for people overseas who cannot get through. The phones only work sporadically, so it's hit and miss, but we can only do our best and keep trying. If you need me to do this for you, please contact me via the contact form on this site and enclose all the information you have for your family members; name, location and contact numbers. Cell phones seem to get through to other cells, landlines are barely operational at the moment. So far everyone who has contacted me has gotten good news so lets all keep our fingers crossed that this keeps on.

Charles over at All Chile.net has organized a contact system using his extensive network of contacts throughout the country, so you can also try contacting him for help as he has had alot of success tracking people down so far.

For now, all we can do is hope and pray that the relief efforts under way start bearing fruit quickly and people are given aid and shelter as quickly as possible. Have faith and be patient. When glass breaks, it does so quickly. It's picking up the pieces afterward that takes time.

Do Something Nice

There is a terrible stray animal problem here in Chile. We try to do our part and take them in when we can, get them vaccinated and sterilized but the costs add up. Any help you send our way is much appreciated, Thank You! .
